Summary
Direct-to-cell-phone connectivity aims to eliminate dead zones across the country. T-Mobile has not confirmed any details regarding the satellite connectivity launch, but SpaceX rumors suggest satellite connectivity will be available this fall.
Breakdown
- T-Mobile and SpaceX signed a contract in 2022 to end dead zones with satellite connectivity.
- SpaceX recently launched at least three dozen satellites to prepare for T-Mobile's connectivity.
- Initial T-Mobile and SpaceX satellite service will only support texting.
- Voice over satellite is expected to follow soon after the initial texting service.
- Satellite connectivity speeds will be slower than current cellular speeds.
- T-Mobile customers should be able to connect to these satellites regardless of their phone type.
- T-Mobile/SpaceX preemptively told the FCC how competitors like Verizon and AT&T would erroneously complain about spectrum interference…and that is exactly what they did. AT&T/Verizon objections are still under review.
- Verizon and AT&T have deals with AST SpaceMobile for satellite connectivity. This will likely not be rolled out until mid/late 2025.
- Apple's satellite connectivity (“SOS emergency mode”) requires a clear sky view for satellite communication. However, future T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T satellite connectivity plans will not have such limitations.
- Plans exist to launch at least 20,000 more satellites in the next decade.
- Increased satellite launches could lead to significant space debris issues sooner rather than later.
